A couple of weeks ago I outlined some of my favorite ways to spice up your workwear when you feel like your wardrobe could use an element of fun. A concept of office style that is arguably more important to have locked down is a repertoire of staple pieces to build upon. I’m really happy with my collection of workwear staples these days, so I wanted to list out some items to get you started on culminating your own set of workplace staples!
The key to a staple piece is that it easily coordinates with other pieces in your wardrobe. Most of the items that I highlight in this post will be shown in black, but the color of the items could easily be substituted by (or added in addition to) other neutral colors like navy blue, white, or a good tan/camel.
High waist, slim slacks

Slim slacks are hands down my favorite fit in terms of work pants. I love to throw in a wide leg and hen I want to make a statement, but I really do find myself teaching for my slim pairs 90% of the time. I like them because they are professional and conservative, but don’t completely hide the figure that I work really hard for. I have these in just about every color since I wear them so often!
A matching pants suit

I believe that at least one matching blazer and pants set is an absolute necessity in a working woman’s wardrobe. They’re great to dress up for an interview or a big meeting, but can also be worn separately when you want to add a polished element to an everyday look. I personally have one in black and another blazer and skirt set in camel brown, and they have served me very well!
A crisp, white button up

Whether you decide to wear this with a sleek black suit or use it as a way to ground a more colorful outfit, this is something that every professional should own. There are a ton of different ways to style them, so I find myself reaching for these a lot. Honestly, you probably can’t have too many of them!
A sturdy leather bag

I love the way that a good leather tote compliments a professional outfit. They’re great functional pieces that hold important items like laptops, portfolios, and/or paperwork that you need to get your job done, so they may as well compliment your look!
A simple cardigan

I’m someone that runs cold most of the time, so these are a huge lifesaver for me. I have them in just about every neutral color to match every look, and I wear them very often. They’re a great alternative for a thick blazer if you’re looking for warmth, and they maintain a clean polished look when they’re added to other office-friendly pieces.
A knee-length pencil skirt

I love pencil skirts. They’re a great way to add a girly element to an office look since pants are generally a go-to, and they’re universally flattering. I have them in a bunch of neutral colors, as well as in some varying colors and patterns.
A simple sheath dress

I have multiple versions of this dress in black, and they are a perfect office piece. There are so many ways to wear them, and they are always a great, super classy option whether you choose to wear them by themselves or under a cute statement blazer!
A killer pair of black pumps

Don’t get me wrong — I wear flats a lot. But, I really do love the way that a good pair of pointed-toe black pumps elevate a work look. I always feel like a true woman when I wear them, and I feel like they only ever add good things to an office outfit.
I hope that I have inspired those of you who are working on building out your office wardrobe to consider some solid staple pieces, or perhaps made those with an extensive wardrobe think about something that may be missing. I have linked my go-to items on my LIKEtoKNOW.it as well as on my Amazon storefront if you would like to grab them yourself, as well as some similar pieces in varying colors that you may want to consider!
